The
study of research methodology is indispensable in every
field of higher education; be it social science, pure
science or business studies. Though it is a critical
component of all the branches of knowledge but it hardly
gets the attention it deserves in disciplines across the
university system. A teacher in higher education has three
basic responsibilities: teaching, research and extension
work. Research is the second dimension of higher education.
Besides teaching and extension activities, every teacher in
higher education is supposed to take up research. A large
majority of higher education teachers, especially in
colleges, engage themselves largely in teaching, and do not
get actively involved in research activities. This is the
scenario all over the country and more so in the
Northeastern region. Whatever little research has been
conducted in this region is methodologically very weak.
Research has a special importance in the academic activities
and its improvisation in Institution of his / her learning.
At institutional level, the faculty also has to undertake
research for their own career development. Research has
become a special career now-days. More importantly, it is a
definite and productive source of input, necessary for
decision and policy makers to formulate and implement a
policy directed towards promoting socio-economic development
of the country. Therefore, to the extent possible, efforts
are being made to encourage research in Social Sciences,
Commerce and Management, and Natural Sciences by providing
number of incentives. But to undertake research, the
necessary knowledge of the Research Methodology and Research
process in theoretical as well as applied perspectives is
necessary. This can be obtained by own individual efforts,
but more importantly, through guidance and training by the
Research scholars and practitioners. This demands to
organize the workshops and training programmes for the
research students as well as guides. The need for organizing
such workshops and training programmes is further
intensified due to wide use and applications of appropriate
research methods, quantitative techniques and computer
software packages for objective and qualitative research. It
is against these
over all backdrops, that the Sibsagar College,
Joysagar, Assam is organizing a seven days’ ‘National
Level Workshop on Research Methodology and SPSS’ for
the post graduate Students aspiring to do research and
registered Ph.D. scholars in social sciences including
commerce and management, Ph.D. and non Ph.D. College and
University teachers, research staff of various State

researches in Social Sciences, Commerce and Management and
others. The present workshop will make an attempt to provide
some practical training in research methodology so that
rigorousness and quality of research in the region improves.

The
Sibsagar
College
is situated at Joysagar by the side of the historic tank
bearing the hallowed memory of Sati Joymati, the Ahom
queen. It was established in 1947, the year of our
Independence
and reflected the spirit of that awakening. Founded by
Padmadhar Chaliha, the
college geared up to its proper infrastructure and
foundational magnitude during the tenure of Paragdhar
Chaliha, the Principal to follow. Over the years,
the college has grown up to a stature of importance so
much so that the UGC accorded it the status of
‘College with Potential for Excellence’. With a
dedicated teaching staff it has proved to be a hub of
advanced academic activities as well. The college has
organized three national seminars and two state level
seminars very recently. It has also brought out two
valuable proceeding volumes with ISBN, and is planning
to do so with selected papers of the coming seminar as
well.
